The Art of the Throw Pillow: How to Style Your Sofa Like a Designer
Throw pillows are the easiest way to refresh a room, but the difference between styled and cluttered comes down to a few simple rules. Here’s how designers approach it.
Start with size. Scale your pillows to your sofa. Begin with two 22” squares in the corners, layer 20” squares in front, and finish with a lumbar pillow (12”x20” or 14”x36”) in the center. Deep sofas can handle 24” pillows, while apartment-size sofas look best with 20”.
Mix your textures. Varied materials make a sofa feel collected rather than bought as a set. Pair smooth linen or velvet with something tactile, like bouclé, chunky knit or mohair. A leather or silk lumbar adds a hint of sheen and contrast. Aim for at least three distinct textures.
Vary pattern scale. Combine one large-scale pattern, one small-scale pattern and one solid. Keeping them in a shared color family makes the mix feel intentional.
Repeat your palette. Pull two or three colors from your rug, art or drapery and echo them across the pillows so the sofa ties into the rest of the room.
Invest in inserts. Choose feather-down inserts one size larger than the cover, such as a 22” insert in a 20” cover, for a full, relaxed look.
Pairs or odd numbers? Symmetrical pairs feel classic and calm, while odd groupings feel relaxed and modern. Either works when it’s intentional.
The result is a sofa that looks effortless, inviting and entirely yours. Need help pulling it all together? Brass Bungalow Design is here to help.
